Amazon has decided to take deliveries to a whole new level in the United States with their new plan to deliver right inside your house in a newly announced key service.

The e-commerce giant announced the new service, currently exclusive to Amazon’s Prime members, simply called “Amazon Key”  provides secured in-home deliveries of packages via smart-locks and a new Amazon device, “Cloud Cam”.

Amazon Key is sold with the Amazon Key System, which is a kit that includes the Amazon Cloud Cam, the Amazon Key app for your smartphone, and a smart-lock which is compatible with Amazon’s services. The smart-locks are manufactured by Yale and Kwikset. The Amazon Key System, starts at US$249.99 + the membership fees for Prime Membership to enable the Amazon Key System to work.

Once the system is set-up the customer can select the “in-home” delivery option while they are shopping on Amazon. And, at the time of delivery, the system will verify the correct driver is at the door, turn on the Cloud Cam which is a home monitoring camera and unlock the smart-lock on the door. The system also records the package being placed inside and the door being shut and locked.

Home-owners can watch the delivery live or just a review of the entire video after the delivery of their package has been completed. Each time a delivery happens, Amazon states that it uses an encrypted authentication process to verify that the correct delivery driver is at the correct delivery address at the correct time.

Amazon also stated that the system can be used to give keyless access to family and friends and as well as service appointments. An Amazon spokesperson, stated that it was Amazon’s experience in the retail, hardware, cloud and logistics sectors which led to inventing and manufacturing the Amazon Key System. However, the system, Amazon states is the next big thing in the e-commerce evolution.

"Amazon Key gives customers peace of mind knowing their orders have been safely delivered to their homes and are waiting for them when they walk through their doors," stated Peter Larsen, Vice President of Delivery Technology at Amazon, "Now, Prime members can select in-home delivery and conveniently see their packages being delivered right from their mobile phones.”

Amazon also noted that the Amazon Key will be available on November 8, 2017. Starting with 27 cities in the United States and more locations coming over time.

However, there are sceptics to this newly-launched technology too, Ben Bajarin, principal analyst with technology researcher Creative Strategies, said “I think people are going to have a really hard time getting over this idea of just randomly letting someone inside your house.”

However, even Ben admits that “…If anybody is willing to do that, it’s Amazon customers, and specifically Amazon Prime customers who order a lot of stuff.”
